Scale Your Dog-Wear System

Love Your Dog-Wear Pattern?
How About Turning It into a Full Range of Sizes?

Take a Sneak Peek Inside the Course

You’re watching a lesson straight from inside Scale Your Dog-Wear System.
The charts, patterns, downloads and lessons I mention are all included when you enrol.

Imagine What This Could Open Up

- Imagine sitting down at your sewing machine and making Dog-Wear for your neighbour’s dog.
- Imagine creating a whole range of sizes and selling your Dog-Wear at a local market.
- Imagine developing digital patterns that other makers can buy and sew.

Instead of being limited by the one size you have, your pattern could become the starting point for so much more.

I Used to Create a New Pattern for Every Dog

When I began making custom Dog-Wear, every dog was treated as a completely new project.

A new dog meant new measurements, a new pattern and a lot of time spent starting over.

That might work when you’re making the occasional custom garment. It becomes much harder when you want to offer several sizes or turn your designs into patterns other people can use.

Since 2015, I’ve been developing and selling custom Dog-Wear and digital sewing patterns. Along the way, I developed a practical system for connecting the dog’s measurements to the points on the pattern that need to change.

Now I’m going to teach you that system.

You Don’t Have to Start Over for Every Size

Knowing you want another size is one thing. Knowing how to create it is another.
- Where do you measure the dog?
- Which parts of the pattern need to change?
- How much do you add or remove?
And how do you make those changes without losing the shape and function of the original design?

There is a method behind it and it's called pattern grading. It allows you to take one base pattern and create smaller and larger sizes from it.

In Scale Your Dog-Wear System, I’ll walk you through that process using simple, hands-on methods—no specialist pattern software required.

What Makers and Clients Say About Working with Me

“Jill not only designed the prototype, but she also graded it for a full range of sizes from XS to XL. What I appreciated most was her ability to bring my vision to life while ensuring the final product met all the requirements for manufacturing.”
M. Hewitt — MuckyDog Inc.

“This pattern was definitely the best-fitted dog coat I have made. I was able to customise the pattern pieces, with the help of Jill’s advice and tutorial, to my dog’s measurements.”
C. Pesale

“Your information was easy to follow, and my raincoat was very professional looking.”
G. Vandenakker

From One Pattern to a Full Size Range

  • Measure the areas of the dog that affect garment fit
  • Understand how those measurements relate to the pattern
  • Read and work with a Dog Size Chart
  • Identify the grading points that control different parts of the garment
  • Increase or decrease a pattern to create additional sizes
  • Separate the core pattern from adjustable areas such as Velcro overlap and elastic
  • Create a Dog Size Chart for the breeds, body types or size range you want to serve
  • Review and test your graded patterns before offering them to others

You’ll work through the process by hand so you can see what is changing, understand why it is changing and apply the method to other patterns.

Practise with the Cozy Coat Pattern

You’ll receive my Medium Cozy Coat Pattern to use throughout the course. It gives you a straightforward base pattern for practising the grading process as I demonstrate each step.

Already have a Dog-Wear pattern you want to grade? You can follow the same method using your own coat or jacket pattern.

Start with a Straightforward Pattern

This course teaches the core grading process using relatively simple Dog-Wear patterns, such as coats and jackets without fitted sleeves, leg pieces or complex shaping. Starting with a straightforward pattern makes it easier to see which grading points need to move and understand how the dog’s measurements affect the pattern.

If you want to work with a more complex pattern—such as one with fitted sleeves, leg pieces or more complex shaping—the Custom Fit Toolkit is a useful first step. It teaches you how to assess fit and customize sleeves and other areas of a pattern. Understanding those relationships will give you a stronger foundation before applying the grading principles taught in this course.

Step-by-step grading for fitted sleeves and other complex pattern pieces is not included in Scale Your Dog-Wear System.

Is This Course for You?

Scale Your Dog-Wear System may be a good fit if:

  • You have a Dog-Wear pattern but don’t know how to create another size
  • You want to grade a relatively simple coat or jacket pattern without fitted sleeves or complex shaping
  • You make Dog-Wear for your own dog and want to make it for other dogs
  • You sell finished Dog-Wear and want to offer a more useful range of sizes
  • You want to develop digital Dog-Wear patterns for other makers
  • You have tried resizing a pattern but it just doesn't seem to fit in certain areas
  • You want to really understand the method instead of just guessing

This is not a beginner sewing course. You should already be comfortable working with a basic sewing pattern.

A Size Chart Is the Starting Point—Not the Final Answer

Dogs can have very different proportions, even when they are similar in weight or belong to the same breed. The size charts included in this course give you useful reference measurements and a place to begin.

You’ll also learn why patterns need to be tested and how to begin developing sizing that reflects the dogs you want to serve.

The goal is not to create one pattern that magically fits every dog.

The goal is to create a thoughtful range of sizes based on real measurements, pattern relationships and a repeatable process.

No Specialist Pattern Software Required

You’ll learn the grading process using paper, a ruler and basic pattern-making tools.

Working by hand helps you understand what is happening at each grading point. If you decide to digitize your patterns later, you’ll already understand the decisions behind the digital work.

You already have the starting point.

Now you can learn how to turn it into something more.

FAQs

  • Do I need pattern-making software?
No. The grading process is taught by hand using paper, a ruler and basic pattern-making tools. No specialist software is required.
  • Can I use my own pattern?
Yes. I provide my Medium Cozy Coat Pattern so you can follow the demonstrations and practise each step. You can also apply the same method to your own simple coat or jacket pattern without fitted sleeves or complex shaping.
  • How much sewing experience do I need?
This is not a beginner sewing course. You should be comfortable reading, cutting and sewing from a basic pattern. You do not need previous experience with pattern grading.
  • What does VIP include?
VIP includes the complete course plus one private 60-minute coaching session with me. You can use the session to ask questions and get help applying the grading method to your own pattern.

You may also submit one Dog Size Chart or grading exercise for me to review before our session.
  • Is the course self-paced?
Yes. You can begin as soon as you enrol and work through the lessons at your own pace. You’ll have lifetime access to the course videos and downloadable resources so you can work through the modules when you want. Plus you can come back to it whenever you need a refresher.
  • Will my pattern fit every dog?
No pattern will fit every dog without adjustment. Dogs can have very different proportions, even when they are a similar weight or belong to the same breed.

Grading gives you a consistent range of sizes and a reliable starting point. Your patterns should still be tested on real dogs and adjusted when needed.
  • What is the refund policy?
I want you to feel confident that this course is right for you. If you enrol and decide it isn’t what you expected, email me within seven days of purchase for a full refund. Refunds are not available after seven days.

Course Curriculum

Jill Bartlett

I design and teach custom-fit dog wear for dogs of all shapes and sizes—especially those with unique needs. What started as making coats for my own dog grew into a passion for helping others create, sew, and sell patterns of their own. I’ve built an online business that blends creativity and practicality, and now I teach makers and entrepreneurs how to do the same. Whether it’s designing patterns, digitizing them in Illustrator, or launching a product, I love showing people how to turn their ideas into something real—and something they’re proud of.
