Troubleshooting Common Knitting Problems

You will almost certainly run into problems as you learn to knit, and that’s completely normal.

Every knitter — no matter how experienced — has dropped stitches, uneven tension, or lost track of their rows at some point.

These issues can feel frustrating at first, but they are all fixable and part of the learning process. Troubleshooting is about learning how to spot problems early and knowing what to do when something doesn’t look quite right.

Dropped Stitches
A dropped stitch happens when a loop slips off the needle and starts to unravel down the fabric.
What to look for:

  • A loose loop or ladder running down your work
  • A gap where a stitch should be What to do:
  • Stop knitting as soon as you notice it
  • Use a knitting needle or crochet hook to lift the stitch back up
  • Place the recovered stitch back on your needle

What to do:

  • Stop knitting as soon as you notice it
  • Use a knitting needle or crochet hook to lift the stitch back up
  • Place the recovered stitch back on your needle

Tension Problems
Tension refers to how tight or loose your stitches are.
What to look for:

  • Stitches that are very tight and hard to knit into
  • Loose, uneven stitches along the row

What to do:

  • Slow down and relax your hands
  • Try not to pull the yarn tight after each stitch
  • Practice keeping your movements consistent rather than focusing on speed

Miscounting Rows or Stitches
Losing track of rows or stitches is very common, especially in the early stages.
What to look for:

  • Your project looks wider or narrower than expected
  • Pattern instructions no longer seem to line up

What to do:

  • Count your stitches regularly, especially at the end of a row
  • Use stitch markers to mark important sections
  • Make small notes as you work to track rows completed

Helpful Reminder
Mistakes are not a sign that you’re doing something wrong — they’re a sign that you’re learning.
Take your time, fix what you can, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you get stuck.
