The Basic Knit Stitch

The knit stitch is the most basic stitch in knitting and is the foundation for many other stitches and patterns.

When worked back and forth on every row, it creates garter stitch, which has a soft, bumpy texture and lies flat. When combined with the purl stitch, the knit stitch is used to create ribbing, stockinette stitch, and countless textured patterns.

Once you understand how to form a knit stitch, you can follow most knitting patterns with confidence and begin building more complex skills over time.

How to do it:

1️⃣ Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand. Hold the empty needle in your right hand.
2️⃣ Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, from front to back.
3️⃣ Wrap the working yarn around the right-hand needle, bringing it from back to front (counterclockwise).
4️⃣ Use the right-hand needle to pull the wrapped yarn through the stitch, forming a new loop.
5️⃣ Slide the old stitch off the left-hand needle, leaving the new stitch on the right-hand needle.
6️⃣ Repeat these steps across the row until all stitches have been worked.

Helpful Notes
Knitting every row creates garter stitch.  Keep your stitches relaxed to avoid tight knitting.  Practice slow, even movements to build muscle memory.
